I recently had the privilege of attending the 2026 National Federation of the Blind National Convention, where thousands of blind individuals, family members, professionals, advocates, and community leaders came together to share ideas, learn from one another, and strengthen our commitment to equality, independence, and opportunity.
The convention featured educational sessions on accessible technology, employment, education, transportation, leadership, and independent living. It was inspiring to witness so many people working together to advance opportunities for blind Americans and to promote a future built on high expectations, accessibility, and equal access.
One of the greatest lessons I brought home is that advocacy must continue at every level. We must educate our elected officials, businesses, schools, and communities about the abilities and potential of blind people while continuing to protect and strengthen the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We must also work together to improve employment opportunities, accessible transportation, affordable housing, and access to technology.
As the Founder of Guiding Paws ICT, I returned to Kansas with renewed energy, fresh ideas, and a stronger commitment to our mission. The convention reinforced the importance of meducating the public about blindness, connecting individuals with guide dog resources, promoting accessible technology, and expanding our Into the Light educational program throughout Kansas.
One of the most valuable aspects of attending the convention was the opportunity to meet and network with leaders and members from across the United States. Learning about successful advocacy efforts, innovative programs, and community partnerships has provided ideas that I look forward to bringing back to the great State of Kansas.
The National Federation of the Blind continues to demonstrate that blindness does not define a person’s future. With proper training, opportunity, accessibility, and high expectations, blind individuals can pursue successful careers, contribute to their communities, and achieve their goals.
I look forward to sharing what I learned with community leaders, businesses, educators, and public officials throughout Kansas. Together, we can continue building a more accessible, inclusive, and equitable future for everyone.
